Are My Genes Stopping Me Losing Weight?

Guilty Woman Wanting to Lose Weight but raiding the fridge.

Could this be you?

Don’t you just hate those lucky people who seem able to just eat any amount without  gaining weight, while you just have to look at food to put on pounds?

Do you blame genetics?

“My genes are stopping me from losing weight, so there’s nothing I can do about it.”

Well, the answer could be ‘yes’ and ‘no.’

“It’s the Ecology Stupid.”

There is a growing body of evidence and research that shows it is the way our genes express themselves that strongly influence appetite and body weight. It is also known in the scientific community that this gene expression is most influenced by our environment. In fact, the prestigious scientific journal Nature published an article on this called “It’s the ecology, stupid.” [NATURE|VOL 418 | 8 AUGUST 2002]

Okay, so this article was based on laboratory work whereby cells of one type of organ were taken from their environment and placed in the different environment of a different organ. The researchers found that these cells responded to their new environment by becoming cells of the new, different organ.

The cells all had the same genes, so what changed? Genes can change the way they’re expressed, e.g. reveal different facets, in response to their environment. When the environment changes, so does the way the genes are expressed.

So What Does This Mean For You?

While your cells are not going to change from liver cells to lung cells, your genes will adapt to your environment in subtle ways that will, in turn, affect your body’s cells. The interaction between the body and the release of hormones like ghrelin, leptin, cortisol, insulin and cholesystokinin (CCK) have an impact on your weight, among other things. So, what does this mean for you?

Your environment includes

  • What, when and how you eat and drink.
  • How you feel.
  • What you do, think and believe.
  • What you perceive, whether true or not.
  • How you live your life and even how you sleep.

However, you are not necessarily hostage to your genes. It is believed that only between 2% and 10% of issues or illnesses are the result of a faulty gene, the rest are the result of how genes are expressed. So although you may have a genetic predisposition to e.g. weight gain, it largely depends on how they are expressed. As your environment plays a large part in this, these things may well be largely under your control.
